The worldwide patron saint of all "footballers, football fans and stadium visitors"

Based on a previous idea of and commitment on the part of the initiator Manfred Pesek, San Luigi Scrosoppi (1804–1884) was appointed the worldwide patron saint of all footballers, football fans and stadium visitors by the Austrian sports bishop Dr Alois Schwarz and the authorities of the Vatican.

According to a worldwide selection process, the cinching factor for this was that Luigi committed himself in an exemplary and sacrificial way for disadvantaged poor children and adolescents. He took them off the streets, freed them from their fears and worries, and learned with them. Particularly progressive was his idea to teach poor children skills through early support, which help the individual to build an “independent” life. The worldwide patron saint of all footballers, football fans and stadium visitors comes from the northern Italian city of Udine.

He is a role model for youth and the values that sport imparts; like fairness, solidarity, mutual support, hard work perseverance and respect. Functions that the sport of football takes over in many countries today. These football rules are the same “all over the world”. Football turns lone fighters into a team and brings young and old, poor and rich together in “peaceful competition”. It creates cohesion, both in the team and in the global “fan communities” of football clubs.

Football constantly generates enthusiasm and emotions and touches the hearts of millions around the world. The well-known gesture of football stars with their “hands to the sky” can now also be seen as a connection to the now well-known patron saint of all footballers.

Luigi 1884 has a worldwide impact, connecting peoples and transcending religions.

The word and figurative mark

The word mark

The short word and the four-digit number come together in a harmonious and attractive form. Due to the high degree of conciseness of what is expressed, this word/number combination fulfils the requirements for a rapid build-up of fame as well as excellent recall value.

he brand is also clearly understandable at the international level, and with its sound pattern of three vowels, it is also phonetically ideal. The addition “The Original” ensures exclusivity for licence partners as well as their customers.

The figure – The original

For the construction and artistic design of the statue “Luigi 1884 – Patron Saint of All Footballers, Football Fans and Stadium Visitors” – The Original – one of the most internationally renowned companies in this area was commissioned: the workshop for sacred art, Ferdinand Stuflesser 1875, in Ortisei in Val Gardena/South Tyrol.

The “purveyor to the papal household” has been restoring works of art and delivering them all over the world for five generations already and has a list of testimonials which is both long and impressive. The figure is protected by international copyright law and may only be reproduced in various materials and sizes with the consent of the rights holder, the Luigi 1884 Fund.

Book about the patron saint

We now have one – a “patron saint of footballers, football fans and stadium visitors”!  It is St Luigi Scrosoppi, or “Luigi 1884” for short. One wonders why there was not previously any patron saint for the most beautiful game in the world.

For motorists, it is Saint Christopher, worn by some well-known Formula 1 racers as a pendant around their neck.  But for footballers and fans, a penalty, the goal that saves the game, that decisive move is just as important, at least, as a “safe drive”. But who is Luigi? This booklet provides answers and also tells the story of how the patron saint of footballers, football fans and stadium visitors was found. Available in brick-and-mortar and online bookstores.

World-famous gesture as an amplifier!

World premiere

As is appropriate for this international, or European, initiative, it is important for the board of the Luigi 1884 Fund to also establish a permanent and lasting structural symbol or landmark.

Therefore, the world’s first official football chapel, “Casa Luigi 1884”, will be built, in which the first or “original inaugural statue” of the official patron saint of all footballers, football fans and stadium visitors will be made available to everyone. In the forecourt, the first life-size statue of “Luigi 1884” will be erected in bronze.

New tourist attraction:
Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples or Trieste?

Since Luigi 1884 comes from Italy, the decision will soon be made as to which city the world’s first football chapel will be located in. It will very quickly develop into a tourist magnet.

Sustainability at your fingertips!

This gives this new initiative and brand a sustainable and intergenerational manifestation that will endure eternally. Just as there will always be football, there will now also always be the patron saint of all footballers, football fans and stadium visitors. And, with the Casa Luigi, “The Original” will also be available to touch.

Landmark for new European initiative.

Casa Luigi 1884, with its original patron saint, provides a visible, permanent and sustainable landmark for this new European initiative: promoting the education and sport of disadvantaged children “on the ground” in their migrant countries of origin. More and more members within the European region have come to the conclusion that the successful  containment of migration can only take place through support measures “on the ground”.

This decision has now been endorsed by the head of the European Commission. This new initiative is now providing a starting signal in the “right direction”!

The brand benefits and is manifested.

The quality seal of “Luigi 1884”, which, therefore, already has positive connotations from its core branding, attains not only eternal brand stability through this new and unique building but also permanent brand attractiveness, together benefitting cooperating licence partners to the full extent.

The Code of Conduct provides security for collaborative partners

This Code of Conduct provides the Luigi 1884 Fund with the necessary basis for providing employees from different cultures and with different values with a uniform, legally correct and ethical process. Luigi 1884 also stands for interreligious dialogue – a topic of increasing importance – which reinforces the unifying power of this new brand.
